There are over 8,000 wine producing Château (vineyards) within the Bordeaux Appellation (area), which is just over 70 miles across. The region has a variety of micro-climates and soils that help it produce some of the best wines in the world. From the damp shores of the Garonne river that produce Sauternes, to the Sun and sea blessed shores of the Gironde peninsula that produce the heady Medoc's, such a diversity of quality wines is hard to find anywhere else in the world.

Many of the vineyards are little more than cottage industries, there are larger vineyards, some with huge reputations, but most 'Château' are relatively small and unknown. There is little on the industrial 'New World' scale. This diversity makes it very difficult to make a reputation through marketing alone. Reputations are only made through the quality of the wine itself!
